individualistic therapeutic understanding of mental health and adopt a systemic framework of
viewing relationships. The primary objective is to provide overall quality mental wellbeing &
healthcare to people. Family therapies emerged simultaneously in the 1950s in a variety of different
countries, and within a variety of different movements, disciplines, therapeutic and research
traditions. It involves all members of a nuclear family or stepfamily and, in some cases members of
the extended family. A therapist or team of therapists conduct multiple sessions to help families deal
with important issues that may interfere with the functioning of the family and the home
environment.
To gain a contextual understanding of the nature of relational concerns and difficulties faced by
Indian families, couples and child in today’s globalizing world. You will learn about history and origin
of family and couple therapy, and about basic concepts of System’s theory & some other theories &
approaches to family counselling. Assessment skills will be involved in couple and family therapy.
Participants will learn detailed understanding of addressing couple concerns and special technique
of dealing with the same. Also, participant will able to examine ethical and legal concerns that
emerge during couple and family counselling and ways of addressing the same.
Therapists may be psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers or counselors. The objective of the
programme is to give knowledge about nature of difficulties faced by couples and families, ways of
assessing and conceptualizing the same and methods of applying this knowledge to intervene.

The duration to complete this programme is 1 year (Post Graduate Diploma), 6 months (Executive Diploma), 3-4 months (Industry Certificate).

All the participants are obliged to timely submit completed assessment assignments (during the programme, usually after every module) and appear for an online exam at the end of the programme. After successful completion, the participants will be awarded Post Graduate Diploma/Executive Diploma/Industry Certificate in Counselling and Family Therapy by Centre for Health Management and Research (CHMR), IGMPI.
