The Post Graduate Diploma/Executive Diploma in Diabetes Education will help students to develop their skills to understand the impact of health behavior and lifestyle on acute and chronic problems of Diabetes and provide a comprehensive, cost effective and self-care management plan.
Diabetes is now an important public health problem, with an estimated 463 million people with diabetes across the world in 2019, a figure that is projected to rise to 700 million by 2045 as per the IDF Diabetes Atlas, 2019. In India, there were an estimated 77 million people with diabetes in 2019, a figure that may rise to 134 million by 2045.It is estimated that about half of all cases of diabetes are not diagnosed, and even of those diagnosed, only about a half are put on treatment. Even among these, at least half are not managed properly.
Several reasons have been attributed for this, like lack of proper knowledge among patients about the disease and its management, dearth of adequate support and care, psycho-social and behavioral issues, etc. In such a scenario, the role of a diabetes educator becomes crucial to ensure proper management and care of diabetes by working with the patients and their caregivers.
In order to enhance core skills and competencies of health professionals to effectively educate people with diabetes, to promote healthy lifestyles and effective self-management for optimal diabetes control, CNDS, IGMPI has designed this programme. This is undertaken through theoretical knowledge and equip the learners with interpersonal communication skills, this will facilitate psychological wellbeing of patients.
The objective of this programme is to enhance your knowledge on all aspects of diabetes management including epidemiology of diabetes, lifestyle (nutrition and exercise) , provide an understanding of the causes leading to diabetes ,diabetic complications on various organs of the body as well as adult education theory and chronic disease self-management principles that can enhance the education of all your patients with diabetes. Understand and tailor diabetes management and education provided to patients based on patient factors and their stage of life (for e.g.- Child, adolescent, adult)
On completion of this programme student will be able to discuss the pathophysiology, epidemiology and risk factors for the development of the different types of diabetes. Review with a patient the diagnosis of pre-diabetes and diabetes, as well as glycemic targets and parameters requiring monitoring to reduce the risk of diabetic complications. You will be able to educate a patient on the role of nutrition, physical activity and exercise in the prevention and management of diabetes.
This programme opens new avenues of specialization for allied health professionals and would offer better work opportunities in the field. It will enable an individual to avail of jobs at government, community and private hospitals, community and private clinics, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies as a diabetes educator. One can work as a diabetes counselor and assist doctor in counselling their Diabetic Patients in any private clinic/hospital.

Any Graduate/ B.tech/ B.Sc. in Microbiology/ Life Sciences/ Botany/ Zoology/ Food Science/ Food Technology/ BE/ B.Pharma/ MBBS/ BDS/ BHMS/ BUMS/ BAMS or any other discipline. Diploma holders are eligible for our Executive Diploma, Industry Certificate, and Certificate Programmes.
The duration to complete this programme is 1 year (Post Graduate Diploma), 6 months (Executive Diploma).
