State officials warn against unpasteurized, raw cheese sold at farmers markets

Michigan state regulators have issued a public alert regarding raw cheese sold at farmers markets due to potential health risks. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that some cheese from Hickory Knoll Farms Creamery LLC, located in Onondaga, MI, may have been produced in unsanitary conditions without pasteurization or antibiotic testing.

The cheese, labeled under “Hickory Knoll Farms,” was sold directly from the farm and various farmers markets in Michigan. Affected markets include Hickory Knoll Farms Creamery, Allen Farmers Market in Lansing, East Lansing Farmer’s Market, and others.

Products involved in the recall include a variety of cheeses such as Chévre, Feta, Cheddar, and Gouda. Although no illnesses have been reported, consuming unsanitary food can pose significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations. Consumers are advised to discard any affected products and can contact MDARD at 800-292-3939 for more information.
