A recent report from Mamavation revealed that 13 popular olive oil brands contain detectable levels of phthalates, with amounts ranging from 655 to 6,092 parts per billion (ppb). Partnering with EHN.org, the olive oils were tested by a U.S. EPA-certified lab. Nine of the 13 brands exceeded 1,200 ppb, and three surpassed 2,000 ppb. Phthalates, linked to hormone disruption, fertility issues, low birth weights, obesity, diabetes, certain cancers, and neurological problems, pose significant health risks. Linda S. Birnbaum, former director of the NIEHS and NTP, highlighted the developmental and neurotoxic effects of phthalates, also noting their carcinogenic potential. These chemicals are common in plastics, personal care products, and increasingly in foods. Despite restrictions on phthalates in children's products, the FDA permits them as food additives. Terrence Collins from Carnegie Mellon University criticized the widespread contamination, emphasizing the health risks of small phthalate exposures. The contamination may stem from manufacturing, storage, or packaging processes. Mamavation found evidence of PFAS in popular olive oil brands including California Olive Ranch, Cobram Estate, Lucini Organic and others.
