More than 37 million Americans suffer from kidney disease, experiencing symptoms like severe swelling, fatigue, back pain, and urinary issues. Approximately 808,000 Americans progress to kidney failure, needing either transplants or long-term dialysis to survive. Sadly, over 250,000 people die annually from kidney disease in the Americas, highlighting its severe impact. Recent research indicates that microscopic plastic particles we unknowingly ingest daily can harm our kidneys, leading to oxidative stress and inflammation. This issue disproportionately affects communities of color due to systemic racism and environmental disparities, with limited healthcare access exacerbating the problem.
Ingesting microplastics occurs through drinking water, plastic containers, and food, damaging kidney cells over time. Black and Latino individuals are disproportionately affected, facing 3.4 and 1.3 times higher risks of kidney failure, respectively.
To address this issue, advocating for environmental reform and limiting microplastics through legislation is crucial. Encouraging natural fiber products, reducing plastic packaging, and using advanced water filtration systems can help reduce exposure.
