Scientists recommend Canada to address emerging water contaminants in the Great Lakes

Scientists studying unregulated pollutants are insisting on coordinated action from both Ontario and federal governments to protect water quality and public health in the Great Lakes area.

Modern contaminants such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals,  and PFAS remain untreated by Ontario's antiquated wastewater treatment infrastructure.

These pollutants pose significant threats to the Great Lakes, vital sources of drinking water for millions and crucial ecosystems.

While neighboring Great Lakes states like Michigan and New York have enacted strategies to mitigate these contaminants, Ontario lags in environmental conservation efforts.

The presence of unregulated pollutants in the Great Lakes constitutes a grave risk to human health and the ecosystem. Given the dependency of millions on the Great Lakes for water, comprehensive measures are imperative to avert enduring ecological harm and adverse health outcomes.
