Hedgehog food recalled following testing finds Salmonella

Vitakraft Sun Seed Inc. of Weston, OH, is recalling certain Sun Seed Vita Prima Hedgehog Food due to potential Salmonella contamination. Handling contaminated pet food can risk human health if hands are not washed after contact.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture found Salmonella in a sample during random testing. The affected lot was distributed to retailers in multiple states, including Florida, Illinois, and Texas. Retailers have been asked to remove the recalled lot from shelves.

Salmonella and Hedgehogs

Infected hedgehogs may show lethargy, diarrhea, weight loss, and decreased appetite. Asymptomatic hedgehogs can also carry and spread the bacteria, posing a risk to other animals and humans. Handwashing after handling animals or their food is crucial.
