Baltimore sues plastic companies due to toxic litter

Baltimore has filed a lawsuit against major plastic producers, including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, alleging deceptive practices and environmental harm caused by plastic waste. The city's legal action targets eight companies, accusing them of creating a public nuisance and employing deceptive business practices related to plastic waste management.

According to Baltimore, these companies misled the public about the effectiveness of recycling, leading to substantial cleanup expenses and health risks. This lawsuit reflects a growing trend among municipalities and environmental organizations to hold plastic producers accountable for their environmental impact.

"This lawsuit is part of a broader effort to make the creators of plastic waste bear responsibility," stated a city official. Plastic waste poses significant threats to the environment and public health, contributing to waterway contamination and air pollution from incineration. Legal actions like Baltimore's could establish precedents in corporate accountability for environmental consequences
