China is currently investigating the widespread use of unclean industrial tankers for transporting cooking oil, which has sparked concerns about public health. Reports indicate that cooking oil has been transported in tankers previously used for fuel without proper cleaning, leading to public outrage. This scandal coincides with a high-level Communist Party meeting focused on economic reform and restoring public confidence.
Recent food safety scandals in China, such as the 2008 infant formula incident, have heightened consumer anxiety. According to one source, "Media attention has highlighted the issue of cooking oil being transported in unclean tankers. In recent years, media oversight has declined significantly, allowing more serious incidents to occur."
Contaminants from industrial chemicals left in the tankers could potentially contaminate the cooking oil with toxic residues. This contamination poses significant health risks, ranging from acute poisoning to long-term illnesses such as cancer.
