How Aloe vera's medicinal properties make it necessary in medicine, food products and cosmetics

In a recent review in Foods, researchers from Italy and Portugal highlighted Aloe vera’s (AV) diverse biological activities and potential in cosmetics and medicine. AV, known for thriving in hot, dry regions, offers numerous health benefits and is dubbed the "miracle plant." It exhibits antiviral, antimicrobial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties, making it a promising natural remedy. However, oral toxicity concerns require attention.

AV shows significant antibacterial and antifungal effects, inhibiting harmful bacteria and Candida species. It also demonstrates antiviral properties against influenza, herpes simplex, and potentially SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, AV aids in wound healing, supports the immune system, and protects the liver, kidneys, and heart. Despite its extensive use in cosmetics and as a food preservative, the high demand generates processing waste, prompting exploration of sustainable management strategies. While AV offers many benefits, further research is needed to address its potential toxicity.
