Two dead in Listeria outbreak in Canada associated with Silk and Great Value brand plant-based milk

In Canada, two people have died due to a Listeria outbreak linked to Silk and Great Value brand plant-based milk products. As of July 18, the outbreak has affected 12 individuals, with nine hospitalized and two fatalities. The patients, aged 37 to 89, reside in Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, with the deaths occurring in Ontario.

The illness onset dates back to August 2023, and the outbreak is still under investigation. Many affected individuals reported consuming the recalled plant-based beverages before falling ill. Listeria symptoms can take up to 70 days to appear, so additional cases may arise.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall notice on July 8. The Ministry of Health is coordinating with local and national health agencies to manage the recall. Those who suspect they are ill from the recalled products, which have best-before dates up to October 4, should consult their healthcare provider.
