Scientists have discovered perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in pesticides used on food crops, homes, and pets, raising concerns about widespread contamination. Known as “forever chemicals” for their persistence in the environment and human body, PFAS have now been detected in pesticides.
The study identified PFAS in pesticides for key food crops like apples, corn, and wheat, as well as in residential pest control and pet flea treatments. Current regulatory efforts for pesticides often overlook PFAS, highlighting a need for improved safety measures.
These chemicals are hidden contaminants, contributing to pollution in waterways, the environment, and potentially our bodies. PFAS exposure is linked to severe health issues, including cancer, hormone disruption, and immune dysfunction. Addressing their presence in pesticides is crucial for protecting public health and environmental safety.
