Honey added to yogurt aids probiotic cultures for digestive health

Adding honey to plain yogurt can enhance its probiotic benefits, according to two studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign published in *The Journal of Nutrition*. The studies found that clover honey, in particular, supports the survival of probiotics like Bifidobacterium animalis during digestion.

In a lab experiment, various honeys were tested for their effects on probiotics in yogurt through simulated digestion. Clover honey showed the best results in maintaining probiotic viability in the intestines. A clinical study with 66 healthy adults confirmed these findings, showing that yogurt with honey supported probiotic survival, although it did not affect bowel movements, mood, or cognition.

A smaller follow-up study found yogurt with honey preserved more probiotics compared to yogurt with sugar. Despite honey being an added sugar, a small amount can be a tasty addition to yogurt. For added health benefits, consider topping yogurt with fiber-rich berries, seeds, or nuts.
