Pennsylvania's government is pushing forward with a controversial plan to capture and store carbon emissions underground, despite facing criticism regarding environmental risks and unproven technology. Governor Josh Shapiro has signed legislation to advance carbon capture and storage in the state. Critics argue that the plan exaggerates the benefits while ignoring potential risks.
The new law introduces a regulatory framework that requires notifying 75% of landowners near storage sites and extends state liability for wells from 10 to 50 years. Some lawmakers and environmental activists are concerned that carbon capture could replicate issues associated with fracking, such as water contamination and insufficient environmental protections.
While carbon capture aims to reduce emissions, there are significant concerns about its safety, effectiveness, and environmental impact. Critics suggest that relying on unproven technology might divert attention from more sustainable solutions like renewable energy and stricter emission controls
