Workers sue following radioactive exposure at Washington nuclear plant

Two nuclear workers have filed a lawsuit after being exposed to plutonium at the Columbia Generating Station in 2021 due to a safety oversight. Two employees at the plant suffered radiation sickness when a containment bag failed during maintenance, leading to exposure to radioactive materials.

The lawsuit alleges that Energy Northwest was negligent by not providing sufficient protective equipment and failing to adhere to safety protocols during the incident. While Energy Northwest and the workers have reached a settlement, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has mandated additional inspections at the facility.

The incident highlights the serious health risks associated with safety lapses in nuclear power plants. It underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and accountability to prevent such occurrences and safeguard both worker and public health.
