Ginseng improves muscle recovery and lessens fatigue in athletes

Ginseng, a popular food supplement derived from various plants and herbs, is renowned for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even anti-cancer properties. Recent research by Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) reveals its efficacy in aiding exercise recovery.

Published in Nutrients, the study indicates that ginseng consumption directly reduces fatigue and enhances muscle recovery post-exercise, serving as a valuable supplement for athletes and regular exercisers when combined with a balanced diet. Regular consumption, unless medically contraindicated, is generally considered beneficial for healthy individuals.

Ginseng significantly mitigates post-exercise muscle damage, promotes muscle regeneration, and aids in recovery from fatigue and inflammation induced by physical activity. Its active compounds regulate biological markers like creatine kinase (CK) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), reducing exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation, while also lowering blood lactate levels to alleviate muscle fatigue and potentially reduce injury risks. Further research may explore ginseng's performance-enhancing benefits in sports and its role in accelerating muscle regeneration processes.
