HistoSonics’ technology to treat liver tumours : Renown Health

Renown Health recently reported the successful use of HistoSonics' Edison System histotripsy technology in treating liver tumors. This system is designed for non-invasive mechanical destruction of liver tumors, including those that cannot be surgically removed. However, the US Food and Drug Administration has not yet evaluated it for any specific disease or condition, and its use in kidney applications remains investigational.

The technology utilizes focused ultrasound waves to accurately target and destroy liver tumors, effective for both primary and metastatic tumors unsuitable for traditional surgery. The precision of the histotripsy procedure allows for the destruction of tumor cells while preserving healthy tissue. As a non-invasive technique, it eliminates the need for incisions, reducing pain and speeding up recovery. Additionally, it minimizes the risk of post-operative complications such as infections and bleeding. Clinical trials have shown a 95.5% success rate in destroying malignant tissue in patients with liver cancer or metastatic tumors. Renown now joins leading institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins in offering this procedure.
