New Jersey company expands recall of cinnamon due to presence of lead contaminant

Gutierrez Distributor of Passaic, NJ, has expanded its ground cinnamon recall to include both Gutierrez and El Servidor Corp. brands due to lead contamination.

Elevated lead levels pose significant health risks. In children, prolonged exposure can cause central nervous system damage, learning disorders, and developmental issues. For adults, chronic exposure is linked to kidney dysfunction, high blood pressure, and cognitive effects. Short-term exposure might not show symptoms, but high or prolonged exposure can lead to more noticeable health problems.

El Servidor Corp. cinnamon was distributed in New York starting January 14, 2024, while Gutierrez brand cinnamon was sold to cash-and-carry customers. Both products, in 1.5-ounce clear plastic bags, were recalled after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets detected high lead levels. Production and distribution have been halted. Consumers should return the product for a full refund.
