Researchers have identified problems at a company linked to a Salmonella outbreak that affected over 60 people in Italy in 2022. The outbreak, associated with a roasted pork product, occurred in the Marche region and was detailed in the Italian Journal of Food Safety. In 2022, Italy saw 175 foodborne outbreaks, with Salmonella responsible for many cases. The outbreak was traced to a processing plant in Fermo, where 64 individuals tested positive for Salmonella, with most patients being children aged 5 to 14. Environmental sampling linked the infection to the pork product. Inspections revealed multiple hygiene and procedural deficiencies at the plant and associated retail stores, including failures in applying HACCP principles. Corrective actions were implemented, and production was suspended, resuming only after improvements were verified about six weeks later.
