Farmers struggle with toxic sludge amid fears of 'forever chemicals' contamination

For years, American farmers unknowingly spread toxic "forever chemicals" across vast areas of farmland, only now realizing the harmful health and environmental effects. Municipal sewage sludge, commonly used as fertilizer, has been found to contain hazardous chemicals like PFAS, leading to widespread contamination in the U.S.

Farmers are increasingly alarmed about the risks to their health and the safety of their crops, with some already facing legal challenges and financial losses. States such as Maine and Michigan have begun testing and regulating these chemicals, but federal action remains limited.

PFAS have been associated with various health problems, including cancer and birth defects. The contamination affects not only soil but also livestock and crops, raising concerns about food safety and farmers' health.
