Connecticut and Massachusetts ban toxic PFAS from firefighter gear

Massachusetts and Connecticut are the first states to ban toxic PFAS chemicals in firefighter gear, aiming to protect firefighters from associated health hazards. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are known for their strong carbon-fluorine bond, which causes them to persist in the environment and accumulate in both animals and humans, posing serious health risks. Often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their inability to break down, they are commonly found in everyday products.

While Massachusetts' ban will take full effect in 2027, both states are addressing the use of PFAS in firefighting gear, which is valued for its heat resistance but linked to cancers and other illnesses. Firefighter and environmental advocates hope these actions will inspire other states to follow suit, potentially leading to a nationwide effort to remove PFAS from protective equipment.
