Environmental groups are raising alarms about the potential health risks of artificial turf, which may expose players to harmful PFAS chemicals. A recent study detected PFAS on players' hands after games on synthetic turf, highlighting concerns over cancers and other health problems linked to these substances.
In response to these risks, some communities in Massachusetts have banned artificial turf. Although the Synthetic Turf Council asserts that its members strive to avoid PFAS use, managing contamination remains a challenge.
PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals," are associated with various health issues. The presence of these chemicals on artificial turf is causing increasing concern about their impact on public health, especially for children and athletes who frequently use such surfaces.
