FSSAI directives related to omission pertaining to labelling for fortified food

The FSSAI has announced the removal of sub-regulation (4) from regulation 7 of the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, which pertains to labeling for fortified food products. This sub-regulation required that packages of iron-fortified foods display the statement: "People with Thalassemia may be taken under medical supervision, and persons with Sickle Cell Anaemia are advised not to consume iron-fortified food products."

The FSSAI’s decision followed a review by a committee led by the DG of ICMR, which was formed by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) to evaluate the advisory on Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia. The committee's recommendations were approved by the MoHFW and forwarded to the FSSAI for action.

This decision was discussed during the 44th meeting of the Food Authority. As a result, the FSSAI's order states that sub-regulation (4) is removed with immediate effect.
