A study in ERJ Open Research suggests that a healthy, plant-based diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts reduces the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), while an unhealthy plant-based diet increases it. Led by Dr Yohannes Melaku from Flinders University, Australia, the study highlights the potential of such a diet in preventing or treating OSA, a condition characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, leading to fatigue and health risks like high blood pressure and heart disease.
Analyzing data from 14,210 participants, the research found a 19% lower OSA risk in those with diets high in plant-based foods, while those with unhealthy plant-based diets faced a 22% higher risk. Sex-specific differences were noted, emphasizing the need for personalized dietary interventions.
Future studies will explore the link between ultra-processed foods and OSA risk and long-term diet-OSA interactions. Lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation, weight management, and physical activity are also important in OSA management. These findings stress the importance of dietary diversity, with a focus on plant-based foods, for overall health and OSA prevention.
