Brain health : The hidden risks of household cleaners

Recent research sheds light on potential hazards associated with common cleaning agents called quaternary ammonium compounds (quats). Scientists have uncovered that quats could be harmful to oligodendrocytes, a type of brain cell. Dysfunction in these cells has been implicated in various neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

Quats are present in numerous disinfectants, and laboratory studies have linked them to health issues like asthma and reduced fertility. Despite their widespread use, the long-term effects of quats on human brain health remain uncertain.

While there is currently no data directly correlating exposure to quats with neurodevelopmental problems in humans, it has been conclusively demonstrated that oligodendrocytes are particularly vulnerable to these chemicals. This highlights the need for further investigation into the potential risks associated with quats and their impact on brain health.
