The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert due to a consumer reporting foreign material in raw pork chorizo. While a recall wasn't initiated as the product is no longer sold, FSIS warns consumers against consuming it, fearing some might still have it in their refrigerators or freezers. The product, produced on Feb. 12 with a best-by date of May 12, is 12-ounce vacuum-sealed packages labeled "LEAN apco BRAND MEATS ALL NATURAL PREMIUM CHORIZO," with the best-by date of 5/12/24. Distributed to H-E-B grocery stores in Texas, it bears establishment number "EST. 602" inside the USDA's inspection mark.
The issue surfaced when the company notified FSIS of a consumer complaint involving hard plastic and metal found in the chorizo. No injuries or illnesses linked to the product have been confirmed.
