World Asthma Day: WHO calls for better education to empower asthmatic people

Asthma education is pivotal for improving the lives of individuals worldwide grappling with the condition. Over 250 million people, mainly in low- and middle-income countries, suffer from asthma, causing approximately 455,000 deaths annually. Effective management through education empowers patients and families to navigate treatments successfully, including medication use and trigger reduction methods. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in disseminating this knowledge, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment. Policy-makers must grasp the disease burden and promote cost-effective interventions, especially in regions lacking essential asthma care resources like inhalers. The Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD) and the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) advocate for asthma education and provide resources for healthcare professionals and patients. Accessible through the WHO Knowledge Action Portal, these initiatives aim to alleviate the global burden of asthma and improve patient outcomes.
