Paris showcases a car-free future during the 2024 Olympics

As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympics, it showcases a remarkable reduction in car reliance, leading to vastly improved air quality. Mayor Anne Hidalgo's initiatives, including banning cars on over 100 streets, hiking parking fees for SUVs, and constructing 1,300 km of bike lanes, have been pivotal in this transformation. Consequently, the city has witnessed a remarkable 40% drop in air pollution, positioning it as a beacon of urban environmental reform. Despite encountering political hurdles, Hidalgo's green policies enjoy widespread support among Parisians. "This is no longer the time for cars, and we need to fight against them for a low-carbon future," emphasizes Hidalgo. Paris's success underscores the potential of reducing car dependency to mitigate pollution and enhance public health, inspiring cities globally in their quest for sustainable urban living and climate action.
