Bayer faces scrutiny for concealing health risks tied to its products, resulting in a $289 million penalty. Internal documents, mostly from Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, show evidence linking Roundup's glyphosate to cancer since 1983. Despite growing evidence linking Roundup to various health issues, Bayer has launched a PR campaign defending its herbicide.
The campaign includes a full-page ad in the Washington Post and a website called Modern Agriculture Alliance, supporting farmers. However, trial lawyers represent over 100,000 individuals, including farmers, claiming health issues due to glyphosate exposure. Bayer's PR tactics resemble those of the tobacco industry, aiming to pass legislation limiting lawsuits. Internal documents reveal efforts to spread disinformation and manipulate glyphosate's safety records. Despite lax EPA regulation, independent analysis finds flaws in industry-submitted studies. Roundup's extensive use has led to glyphosate-resistant superweeds, adding to farmers' challenges.
