The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru has launched the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s multistate study on student mental health in Karnataka. This initiative addresses significant stress among youth, often leading to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The three-year project, part of a broader effort in eight states, aims to develop scalable, evidence-based mental well-being resources for students in grades 9-10, pre-university, and colleges.
NIMHANS, in collaboration with Karnataka's Health and Education Departments, is spearheading this initiative. A 2021 UNICEF report noted that one in five young people aged 15-24 reported depression or disinterest. The National Mental Health Survey of India (2015–2016) found high rates of diagnosable mental health issues among adolescents and young adults, particularly in urban areas.
The project focuses on refining action plans and overcoming barriers to implementation in Bengaluru, aiming for a scalable model to inform national policy on student mental health and suicide prevention.
