Cucumbers linked to ongoing Salmonella Africana outbreak

The CDC, with state health departments and the FDA, is investigating a Salmonella Africana outbreak linked to cucumbers, affecting 162 cases across 25 states and D.C. Predominantly affecting females (64%) with ages ranging from less than 1 year to 92, 54 cases required hospitalization. Underreporting suggests more cases, and common consumption of cucumbers by 47 of 65 interviewed patients strengthens the association. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) shows a shared bacterial source among cases, with 162 samples exhibiting antibiotic resistance, complicating treatment.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture identified Salmonella in cucumber samples, possibly matching the outbreak strain. CDC advises against consuming recalled cucumbers, urging thorough cleaning of associated surfaces. Businesses should halt sales of the recalled cucumbers and inform customers. Anyone showing Salmonella symptoms after cucumber consumption should seek medical help promptly.
