IAP introduces campaign “Tackling Cough with Care” under its “IAP Ki Baat, Community Ke Saath” nationwide initiative

The Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) has launched its 8th awareness campaign, "Tackling Cough with Care," after positive feedback on previous initiatives addressing obesity, measles, autism, Down syndrome, and thalassemia.

Previously, the "IAP Ki Baat, Community Ke Saath" campaign focused on critical child health issues, aligned with the 2024-2025 Presidential Action Plan. This ongoing effort aims to educate communities annually for two years.

Coughing is common in children due to viral infections or allergies. Immunization and teaching proper cough etiquette are emphasized to reduce infection spread. Avoiding home irritants like tobacco smoke and strong scents helps alleviate allergic cough. Persistent coughing disrupts sleep and daily activities warrants evaluation by a paediatrician, who may recommend tests like chest x-rays or blood tests.

Over-the-counter cough syrups are generally unnecessary and potentially harmful for children. Treatments include bronchodilators for allergic cough and antihistamines for post-nasal drip. Home remedies like honey and warm liquids are recommended.

The initiative also educates on appropriate antibiotic use to combat respiratory infections in young children, promoting community awareness and child health.
