Activists demand halt to uranium mining near Grand Canyon

Environmentalists and tribal members are urging Arizona officials to cease uranium mining near the Grand Canyon over health and environmental concerns. Activists have presented Governor Katie Hobbs with a petition featuring over 17,500 signatures, demanding the closure of the Pinyon Plain Mine. Uranium mining poses serious health risks and threatens essential water sources for the Grand Canyon’s ecosystem and nearby communities. While the governor’s office has received the petition, no action has yet been taken. The Grand Canyon, a focal point for conservation, faces increased urgency as uranium mining threatens to contaminate water and disrupt ecosystems. The Havasupai Tribe, whose ancestral lands are in the Grand Canyon, has expressed grave concerns about the potential impacts on their health and way of life, emphasizing the need to protect both human populations and local wildlife.
