An abandoned oil platform near Galveston released extensive oil into the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Beryl brought 60 mph winds. The rusted platform off the Bolivar Peninsula leaked natural gas, saltwater, and hydrocarbons, resulting in a miles-long oil sheen.
The Texas General Land Office is investigating the leak, which intensified following the hurricane's strong winds. This oil spill poses a threat to local fish spawning, as the hydrocarbons on the water surface can endanger the young fish during their vulnerable developmental stage.
"Any time old, rusty pipes are disturbed, it exacerbates the problem," a spokesperson noted. The spill highlights the dangers of deteriorating offshore infrastructure in the Gulf, underscoring the environmental risks associated with aging oil platforms and their impact on marine life.
