Pollution spikes around e-commerce hubs from truck traffic, study finds

A NASA-funded study reveals that nitrogen dioxide levels rise significantly near large e-commerce warehouses, heightening asthma risks for local residents. The research found that nitrogen dioxide pollution increases by 20% near these warehouses. Among 150,000 warehouses analyzed, the busiest hubs exhibited higher pollution levels.

The study highlights that minority communities are disproportionately affected, as they often live close to these warehouses and inhale more pollutants. Modern warehouses, built since around 2010, feature more loading docks and parking spaces compared to older ones, which contributes to increased emissions.

Nitrogen dioxide, a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion, is primarily released from diesel trucks and machinery used in logistics operations. Prolonged exposure to elevated nitrogen dioxide levels is associated with respiratory problems, including asthma and reduced lung function, with children and the elderly being particularly at risk. Communities of color frequently face greater exposure due to the strategic placement of warehouses in their neighborhoods.
