Wildfires in Canada raise health concerns with constant smoke exposure

The rising frequency and intensity of wildfires in Canada are creating significant long-term health risks due to ongoing smoke exposure. Over the past two decades, the incidence of wildfires in Canada has surged by 220%, severely impacting air quality. Prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke has been associated with premature death, decreased lung function, and increased cancer risks. Additionally, it can impair cognitive function and negatively affect prenatal health. Chronic smoke exposure can also lead to a variety of respiratory issues, such as exacerbating asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, resulting in more frequent and severe attacks. Even individuals without pre-existing conditions may develop new respiratory problems after extended exposure. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions, face even greater risks.
