Toxic trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a byproduct of common refrigeration chemicals, is becoming a major environmental concern in Maine and globally. TFA results from hydrofluorocarbons used in aerosols and refrigeration, and has been detected in drinking water and rain. The U.S. EPA does not classify TFA as a PFAS chemical, complicating efforts in Maine to set exposure limits. Private labs in Maine plan to test for TFA despite federal limitations on its regulation as a "forever chemical." As TFA's prevalence grows, it poses significant health and environmental risks. The lack of regulation and testing for TFA highlights the need for stricter oversight and safer alternatives to protect public health and the environment.
