J&J introduces Velys Spine surgical robotics and navigation platform

Johnson & Johnson has launched the Velys Spine, a surgical robot and navigation platform developed with eCential Robotics. The 510(k)-cleared system assists in screw placement for both freehand and robotic-assisted spine surgeries. It is set for commercial release by Depuy Synthes in early 2025 and will enhance J&J’s existing Velys product line.

eCential, a French company, also received FDA clearance in June for a spine navigation and robotic-assistance device compatible with Depuy Synthes instruments. The device supports cervical, thoracolumbar, and sacroiliac spine fusion, offering 3D surgical planning and robotic guidance.

J&J’s hip sales grew 5% to $417 million and knee sales rose 8.4% to $394 million in Q2. The company also gained 510(k) clearance for its Velys robot in partial knee replacements, aiming to capture more market share from competitors like Stryker and Zimmer Biomet.
