A Listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meats has resulted in three deaths and 43 confirmed cases across 13 states as of August 8. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that deli meats, including Boar’s Head liverwurst, are contaminated with Listeria. Boar’s Head has recalled over 7 million pounds of products, which can be identified by specific USDA codes like "EST. 12612" or "P-12612." The recalled items were produced as recently as July 17.
Refrigeration does not kill Listeria, but heating the meats to 165°F or until steaming hot does. The CDC believes the actual number of cases may be higher, as some people recover without seeking medical care. Investigators found Listeria in unopened Boar’s Head products in Maryland and New York, confirming the strain as the outbreak source. Consumers are advised to clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled meats.
