North Fish USA Inc, based in Hallandale, FL, initiated recall of imported 9-ounce packages of "Cold Smoked Capelin" as the product exceeded 5 inches in length and appeared uneviscerated, which raises the risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination. This potential issue was identified by Patriot Foods following a routine inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and subsequent analysis by their Food Laboratory. Eviscerated fish longer than 5 inches may harbor Clostridium botulinum spores, especially in the viscera, posing a risk of botulism—a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness. Symptoms of botulism include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, breathing difficulties, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. Immediate medical attention is advised for anyone who encounters these symptoms. The recalled product was distributed in Georgia and New York and may have been further distributed to various retail stores along the East Coast. To the date of recall initiation, no illnesses in connection to the said problem were reported.Consumers are advised against using the product even if it looks or smells good. Consumers who have bought imported 9-ounce packages of North Fish USA “Cold Smoked Capelin” are requested to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
