Traces of Toxic Phthalate chemicals detected in popular avocado oils

A recent report from Mamavation reveals that eleven popular avocado oils contain detectable levels of phthalates. Collaborating with EHN.org, Mamavation had these oils tested by a U.S. EPA-certified lab, finding phthalate levels ranging from 76 to 56,808 parts per billion (ppb). Out of the 11 brands tested, five had levels below 800 ppb.

Phthalates, known for disrupting hormones and potentially causing fertility issues, low birth weights, obesity, diabetes, some cancers, and neurological problems, are concerning. These chemicals are commonly found in plastics, personal care products, and increasingly in foods. Earlier testing by Consumer Reports identified high phthalate levels in various food items, including peaches, pizza, and burgers.

In a May investigation, Mamavation also detected phthalates in all 13 olive oils tested. While the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission limits certain phthalates in children's products, the FDA permits their use in foods and has rejected calls to ban 28 specific phthalates. The source of phthalates in avocado oils remains unclear but may involve manufacturing, storage, or packaging processes. Brands like Primal Kitchen, Simple Truth, and Trader Joe’s were found to contain these chemicals.
