US must lead efforts to decrease plastic production in global treaty

As final negotiations for a global plastics treaty approach, the U.S. is being urged to back substantial reductions in plastic production rather than focusing solely on waste management and recycling. In previous treaty discussions, nearly 200 petrochemical lobbyists influenced U.S. policy to align with industry interests. However, the U.S. has recently shifted its position to support global targets for a 40% reduction in plastic production by 2040.

The Biden-Harris administration is being encouraged to sign the "Bridge to Busan" declaration, which advocates for sustainable plastic production. "The world needs U.S. leadership on reducing plastic production, and the Biden-Harris Administration seems poised to deliver."

Plastic production significantly contributes to climate change and pollution, making strong U.S. leadership crucial in achieving meaningful global reductions in plastic usage.
