Agricultural development is often accompanied by waste resulting from the overuse of intensive farming methods and excessive chemical application, which significantly impacts rural and global environments. Agricultural waste refers to residues produced during various farming activities such as cultivation, livestock production, sericulture, and aquaculture. Proper collection, storage, treatment, transfer, and utilization of these wastes are essential to maintaining a healthy environment. When managed effectively through agricultural waste management systems, these wastes can be transformed into renewable materials for both human and agricultural purposes. Traditional agricultural practices followed a circular model, where virtually no waste was produced. Residues were returned to the soil as compost, used as bedding in livestock farming (and later composted), or utilized as animal feed, producing both protein and manure. Additionally, agricultural by-products were repurposed for construction materials or fuel for domestic energy. Circular agricultural production promotes soil conservation, waste reduction, and the reuse and recycling of residues. This course help to covers all these sectors.
However, the growing global population and increased demand for food and agro-industrial products have driven a shift toward linear agricultural production, which generates vast amounts of agricultural residues, agro-industrial by-products, and food waste. This course underscores the importance of reintroducing sustainable practices for managing agricultural waste.
Current waste management models emphasize circular agricultural production and bioeconomic approaches focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste. These approaches consider agricultural waste as valuable raw materials that offer economic benefits to farmers, consumers, and investors across various industries, including crop and animal production, animal and human health, food and beverages, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and materials industries. This strategy includes technologies that convert agricultural waste from crops, horticulture, livestock, and fisheries, many of which have either been commercialized or are nearing commercialization.
