Veg oil with more than 25% TPCs banned for frying purpose by FSSAI
In a recently issued draft notification, the FSSAI has fixed Total Polar Compounds (TPCs) for unused veg oils/fats at not more than 15%. And the use of veg oil having TPCs more than 25% is banned for frying.

New Sanitization Methods to boost Improved Raspberries Processing
The Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) at Illinois Institute of Technology released a study claiming that new techniques in processing of frozen raspberries can minimize the risk of certain foodborne illnesses. Efficacy of chlorine alternatives in the elimination of norovirus, hepatitis A and Listeria monocytogenes was investigated in the study.

Food Safety in Corn Products can be improved using New Reference Material
A new reference material to identify deadly toxins in corn products has been developed by the scientists at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This new product namely Standard Reference Material 1565 or SRM 1565, can be used by the lab scientists to measure poisonous compounds like mycotoxins (produced by mold) in corn.

Red color coding soon to be must for high-fat, sugar, salt foods
FSSAI’s new labelling and display guidelines will make it compulsory for FBOs (Food Business Operators) to display red color-coding for food products containing high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) on front-of-the-pack labels. New norms will supersede the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011 and in a period of three years color-coding requirements will be implemented in a phased manner.

US lab reports suggests alarming Cyanide levels in Indian salt brands
American West Analytical Laboratories, United States of America stated in its report that the high profile salt brands selling processed iodised salt in Indian market contain some carcinogenic components like cyanide at harmful levels. This was conveyed after conducting tests on numerous salt brands like Tata salt, Sambhar Refined Salt etc. and the concentration of cyanide found in them was 1.85mg/kg and 4.71mg/kg respectively.

FDA Released New Draft Guidance for Improving Seed’s Safety for Sprouting
In the recent time, the FDA has come across many outbreaks of foodborne illness related to contaminated sprouts and their study. These outbreaks lead to some serious illness issues to many people. Study from the FDA indicates that it may be due to the use of contaminated seeds used for sprouting. As the seeds are grown in warm and humid conditions, they become prone to bacteria infection.

Gluten-free food note by FSSAI brings safe food for allergic people
To ensure safe food for people with a gluten allergy, the FSSAI has issued a guidance note on gluten-free food. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Celiac disease termed for gluten allergy, is a hereditary, chronic inflammatory disorder of the small intestine, stimulated by gluten in genetically predisposed individuals.

Cooking oil collection guidelines issued by FSSAI
The guidelines for collection of the used cooking oil by biodiesel manufacturers from FBOs (food business operators) through authorized collection agencies has been issued by the FSSAI. The apex regulator gave the responsibility to the biodiesel manufacturers for ensuring that the used cooking oil collected by authorized agencies does not go back into the food value chain. It should only be used to manufacture biodiesel.

19 rapid analytical food testing kits approved by the FSSAI

Fewer food licenses by the FSSAI resulting in Food-Borne Disorders
According to a recent report, only 4.67 lakh eating out places are licensed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India out of 25 lakh places including eateries, restaurants and dhabas. It indicates that the public health is at risk due to non-regulatory approach. The state food safety authorities have been asked by the FSSAI to issue licenses within two months of filing to eligible parties. However, the app-based food ordering business lead to the generation of more food outlets by those who do not have the FSSAI license.

Non-compliance of FSSAI’s Hygiene rules by Juice Shops
According to a report by the National Institute of Nutrition, about 97% of tested fruits samples contained pathogens such as faecal coli forms, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus and E-coli. It is due to non-compliance of hygiene rules issued by the FSSAI.

14 unaccredited state labs operation will be discontinued
FSSAI will be discontinuing the operations of 14 unaccredited laboratories as food laboratories. This will be done because all 14 laboratories have not submitted the undertaking with NABL accreditation despite of several reminders in last two years. These labs will be discontinued with effect from 14 June 2019 as per Section 98 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Draft regulation to define mozzarella cheese: FSSAI
A draft regulation has been notified by FSSAI stating the mozzarella cheese definition and standards for lactose-free/low-lactose milk. The definition was not stated in the earlier regulation leading to the increase utilization of mozzarella cheese in quick service restaurants.
New labelling regulations for wheat and maida deferred by 3 months: FSSAI
FSSAI has given a three-month extension till 31 July 2019 to food business operators (FBOs) to label refined wheat flour as maida and wheat flour as atta on food products. The due date to follow this order issued by FSSAI was 30 April 2019. The time period has been extended to comply the order following the industry scenario and representations received from FBOs. The extension helps the state food authorities to make the required arrangements to conduct surveys.
Draft notification to modify Appendix A under food additives: FSSAI
A draft notification has been released by FSSAI to modify Appendix A under heading IV of food additives. It has been named as the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2019. It contains the maximum quantity level of various additives which can be utilized by a food manufacturer, majorly for bakery products. Food additives have been utilized to improvise the appearance, quality and taste of food products.
Chinese milk and chocolate import ban extended by six months
A further six month ban extension has been enforced by FSSAI on the import of various Chinese items such as chocolates, and milk products. This extension has been done because the entry ports in India have not upgraded their food testing labs so far.
New method by FSSAI to identify veg oils adulteration in ghee
The food regulator of country FSSAI has released a latest method to identify the adulteration of vegetable oils in ghee. Scientific panel, food authority and scientific committee have approved this new method. Food testing laboratories are directly to utilize this method with immediate effect. Method will be applicable for groundnut oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and coconut oil.

New stevia leaf-based flavor enhancers to increase cocoa and vanilla flavors have been launched by PureCircle. This can support the companies to manufacture products at affordable prices. Natural flavors can be written on labels for these new products.

Foreign material found in RTE Corned Beef
San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico-based Procesadora La Hacienda Inc.recalled RTE corned beef after receiving complaints of possible contamination of product with soft plastic and metal pieces.The product was distributed to schools . Federal officials have requested School nutrition professionals who have purchased these products not to prepare or consume these products and have advised to throw away or return to the place of purchase.

Nutrisca, a St. Louis company is recalling it’s products because of excess levels of Vitamin D. As per company’s recall notices ,the presence of excessive vitamin D resulted from a formulation error. The product was distributed through retail stores nationwide. The recalled dry dog foods
FSSAI Issues order regarding display of display boards for different Food Businesses
As per order issued dated 19 September 2018, FSSAI has made mandatory the display of food safety display boards for consumer awareness. Display board needs to be displayed all the times in a prominent place in the premises. The display board needs to mention the FSSAI license number so as to ensure compliance of the conditions of the license. Regarding the printing specifications, A4 size for FSSAI Registered food business and A3 for FSSAI Licensed Food Business is recommended by the regulator.
Peanuts Recalled by PepsiCo because of Aflatoxin contamination
Peanuts were recalled from multiple countries due to higher than permitted levels of Aflatoxin contamination in the product. According to PepsiCo, the product has been sent to and sold in Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. PepsiCo is requesting people not to consume the product and return it to the point of sale. Aflatoxins are poisonous carcinogens , they are produced by moulds which grow in soil, decaying vegetation, hay, and grains. Children are particularly affected by Aflatoxin exposure, which is associated with stunted growth, delayed development, liver damage, and liver cancer.
Strawberries found to be contaminated with needles in Australia.
Seven brands of strawberries in Australia believed to be contaminated with needles and pins prompting authorities to issue warnings to public to slice the fruit before eating. Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart told reporters on Monday that it was unclear if the contamination was the result of a single person acting alone or several people acting independently and that tracing back through the complex supply chain was taking time. Consumers in Queensland were the first to report finding needles embedded inside strawberries.
