Clinical Psychology is one of the subdivisions of Psychology that focuses on diagnosing and treating internal, emotional and behavioral diseases. Many of the more common diseases that may be treated include substance abuse, eating diseases, learning disabilities, depression and anxiety. The clinical psychologist helps their patients to solve problems — behavioral, internal and emotional — in their lives. Through interviews, observation and tests, the psychologist will identify the diseases. Psychologists keep an eye on the patient’s progress regularly to make sure that their requirements are met by the programme of action, and to regulate it if demanded.
There is a growing demand for counsellors in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, old age homes, schools, special education centers, welfare organizations, adoption agencies, HIV/AIDS patients counselling centers, support groups for alcoholics/drugs and other substance users, helpline services like Suicide prevention/child helpline, etc., police training centers, jails/correction centers, remand homes, community-based mental health programmes, tribal welfare organizations, NGOs/International agencies etc. By keeping in mind, the need of counsellors, IGMPI starts a one-year Post Graduate Diploma programme in Clinical Psychology.
