Globally, at least four billion people lack access to safe drinking water, or the available water is significantly compromised due to various anthropogenic activities. In the South Asian region, which is home to over 1.7 billion people, it is difficult to find a single city, town, or village where the majority of residents consider tap water safe to drink without health concerns. This alarming reality calls for a holistic evaluation of the human activities that impact water quality, demanding systemic action and informed intervention.
In response to these challenges, the Institute of Good Manufacturing Practices of India (IGMPI) offers a certificate course in Water Quality and Management, designed to benefit both experienced professionals and newcomers in the industrial and environmental sectors. The course prepares individuals to take on leadership and managerial roles within the impact sector, especially in areas related to global climate change, scientific communication, and project management. It provides interdisciplinary training, covering both the natural and physical sciences, as well as social science and policy dimensions of water governance.
With increasing government focus on river rejuvenation and conservation projects such as Namami Gange, professionals equipped with specialized knowledge in water quality management will have a distinct advantage. This program not only enhances technical and analytical skills but also empowers learners to contribute meaningfully to sustainable water practices and public health safeguards, making it highly relevant in today’s environmental landscape.

Future career prospects
India’s environmental sector is expanding rapidly. Around 20% of the current workforce is employed in this domain, and the number is expected to double by 2030. Globally, over 24 million green jobs are projected by the same year, many involving water resource management, wastewater treatment, and climate resilience. Major national programs such as Jal Jeevan Mission, Namami Gange, and AMRUT are generating consistent demand for skilled professionals in water-related roles.
Graduates can explore opportunities in key regulatory and public sector bodies including the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs), Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Public Health Engineering Departments (PHEDs). These institutions regularly recruit experts for water quality monitoring, compliance checks, urban water management, and river basin conservation. Other relevant government agencies include the Central Water Commission and the National Mission for Clean Ganga.
In the private sector, professionals are hired by environmental consultancies, infrastructure firms, and water-intensive industries. Indian companies such as Tata Consulting Engineers, L&T Infrastructure, IL&FS Environmental, and WAPCOS Ltd. recruit for roles in effluent treatment, water safety plans, and compliance design. International engineering firms operating in India like AECOM and ERM also offer project-based roles in urban water systems and industrial water audits.
Research institutions and think tanks also provide career avenues, particularly in sustainable development and rural water access. Organizations like the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), engage in community-based water initiatives, policy research, and advocacy. Water-focused NGOs and multi-institutional development projects further increase employment opportunities for trained professionals.
