Workshop on: Introduction to Nutrition

Nutrition is the scientific study of the interactions between living organisms and food. It is a foundational aspect of human health, impacting physical development, disease prevention, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. This session introduces key nutritional concepts that form the basis for diet planning, public health nutrition, and clinical dietetics.

Understanding nutrition enables professionals to design effective dietary interventions, address deficiencies, and support health across various stages of life.

Importance of Nutrition Training:

  • Supporting healthy growth and development.
  • Preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
  • Combating under nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
  • Promoting health literacy and sustainable eating habits.

Topics for Workshop on Introduction to Nutrition:

1. Introduction to Nutrition

  • Nutrition is the science of how food affects the body.
  • Branches include clinical, public health, sports, and food nutrition.

2. Macronutrients & Micronutrients Overview

  • Macronutrients:
    • Carbs (energy), Proteins (repair & growth), Fats (energy & hormone function).
  • Micronutrients:
    • Vitamins (A, B, C, D, etc.) and Minerals (Iron, Calcium, Zinc, etc.) needed in small amounts for body functions.

3. Role of Water and Fiber

  • Water: Essential for hydration, temperature regulation, and nutrient transport.
  • Fiber: Aids digestion, prevents constipation, and supports heart health.

4. Nutrient Deficiencies & Public Health

  • Common: Iron (anemia), Vitamin A (vision), Iodine (goiter), Vitamin D (bone health).
  • Linked to poor diet and health outcomes.
  • Public health programs like Mid-Day Meal and Poshan Abhiyaan address this.

5. Principles of Balanced Diet & Meal Planning

  • Include all food groups: grains, pulses, fruits, vegetables, dairy, fats.
  • Follow variety, moderation, and balance.
  • Use ICMR guidelines and portion control for planning.

Eligibility

Any Diploma holder/ graduation/ B.tech/ B.Sc. in Microbiology/ Life Sciences/ Botany/ Zoology/ Food Science/ Food Technology/ BE/ B.Pharma/ MBBS/ BDS/ BHMS/ BUMS/ BAMS or any other discipline. Diploma holders are eligible for our Executive Diploma, Industry Certificate, and Certificate Programmes.

Workshop Deliverables

  • The study resources for the Workshop topic ensuring the needs of the audience will be provided to all the participants. The training material is appropriately aligned with the current Industry's expectations.
  • An interactive lecture on the topic giving all flexibility to the participants.
  • Online discussion of the Workshop topic for ensuring active participation of each attendee.
  • All learning and training delivery initiatives shall be conducted in English.

Workshop Completion Certification
