The Association of Physicians of India (API) and the Indian College of Physicians (ICP) have released new guidelines for managing hypertension in Indian patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Given the high prevalence of both conditions in India, these guidelines address the need for a specific protocol to manage this dual burden effectively.
Hypertension and diabetes often coexist in India, increasing the risk of cardiovascular and renal complications. The guidelines, developed with input from specialists, emphasize early detection, comprehensive assessment, and dual antihypertensive therapy combining Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) with Cilnidipine, a newer Calcium Channel Blocker. They also recommend incorporating Renin-Angiotensin System blockers and newer anti-diabetic agents, and advocate for lifestyle changes, including yoga, to improve management outcomes.
Available in the Journal of Association of Physicians of India (JAPI), these guidelines offer a valuable resource for clinicians to enhance patient care.
