Charities Warn Against Hands-Free Feeding in Baby Slings

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) and Lullaby Trust warn that hands-free breastfeeding or bottle feeding while carrying a baby in a sling is unsafe, particularly for premature babies and those under four months.

Their updated guidance follows an inquest into the 2023 death of six-week-old Jimmy Alderman, who suffocated while being breastfed in a sling. The coroner found a lack of clear safety guidance on baby carriers.

New Safety Recommendations

  • Feeding while moving in a sling is unsafe
  • Always be able to see your baby’s face
  • Ensure their airway remains clear

The NHS also advises keeping a baby’s head uncovered in slings. The Lullaby Trust is funding research to improve safety guidance for parents.
