EU Launches PFAS Reduction Project in Healthcare

As part of Horizon Europe (HORIZON), the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) launched the "PFAS - Exposure, Emissions, and End-of-Life in the Healthcare Sector" project in January 2025. The initiative aims to reduce PFAS emissions and exposure while developing safe alternatives.

Key Objectives:

  • Health Innovation & Competitiveness – Supports cross-sector innovation and EU healthcare leadership.
  • Life Cycle Perspective – Identifies PFAS risks at all stages in healthcare.
  • Risk Reduction – Develops safe disposal, reuse, and recycling methods.
  • Alternative Solutions – Creates PFAS substitutes that meet regulatory and environmental standards.
  • EU Leadership – Strengthens EU self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals and medical R&D.
  • Cooperation & Knowledge Transfer – Enhances collaboration and influences future PFAS policy.
  • Planning Certainty – Provides clear regulatory guidance for medical manufacturers.

Target Groups: Medical and pharmaceutical companies, authorities, hospitals, and waste disposal firms.Application Deadlines:

  • Phase 1: April 23, 2025
  • Phase 2: October 14, 2025
